Hi! Following discussions among judges, we decided to give the win to $eeR and Lck. It was a very tight match and it is a shame you were not able to play more turns. @$eeR and Lck: please make sure to play faster and to avoid delaying the game in further rounds.

Nook & Melciar have another chance to stay in the tournament since we have two teams who are leaving the tournament. We still have to decide to which match Nook & Melciar will be affected, you should hear from that very soon.

Hi! I contacted Lck who said he didn't see it was his turn as he didn't receive any email. So I expect him to have played the turn by now?

@all: do you have email notifications with the time when each player received his turns over the whole duration of the match? Would be useful.

Hey! Finally read this report, thanks Jean!

I'm quite impressed by your research income. How did you manage to get so much while playing Necro (= low city economy)? Also quite impressed by your summoning of Dread Reapers and all the stuff that fast.

It looks like you got the inspiration for the "no city economy" run that you achieved against gab by watching how Fistandantilus played against you. <smiletext1>

Impressive play by Fistandantilus and Keldon too!

Written on 2018-03-14 22:17:48

Late game decisions were entirely dictated by the deadline. In the last turns I could have gone north and easily finish off Melciar but with just two days remaining on the clock we would have lost anyway on points as I had no domain.

We discussed that at lenght and I'm pretty sure trying the odds in a decisive battle against you was the only option left at that point, that's why I rushed you even after seeing your armies.

It was a game of misclicks btw, as keldon can attest :p thanks for the report, it was interesting.

Written on 2018-03-14 13:30:31

Did you expect me to forget to write a report on a game of this excellence? Certainly, not.
It was my best game in this tournament and I want to comment on it <smiletext0>. Let's start with some warm words about Fistandantilus and Keldon. They both are high-level players who forced me to show my best in this game. I believe I wouldn't have managed had I taken another class, so I'm sorry for using all the powerfull features of necromancer (which might soon be nerfed).
Keldon has become a very powerful player. I was impressed by many things showed by him in my 4-4 game against the Sinners. I'm still going to write a report about that match, it's just too difficult to do it alone (90 turns there...). In this tournament game he lacked aggression. He could have very easily backstabbed me with some hidden hunters and shamans.
Anyway, he managed to expand a lot and almost defeated Melciar. He completely outplayed my teammate.
Fist showed an extremely good understanding how to survive and continue fighting without any cities. In the end, he just lacked several more units to win the decisive battle...
But enough spoilers for now. Let's start the report and show you the game from the beggining.
My strategy was pretty simple and lineal here: I took elf necro and got 3 initiatives - the best possible starting army. Using the unicorn rider to split ai units, I level uped everyone quickly and soon got 3 elite storm sisters with inflict stun ability. I was able to take a dungeon and form a good army.
Melciar rushed into 2 crusaders and tried to take a Sphinx Temple to boost himself to exalted. He managed to win the fight but made some awful mistakes (for example, he had enough upgrade points but didn't take strong will => his leader was petrified on round 1 of the tactical battle). As a result, he went into the void >_> and lost his cavalry and one more unit. He was out of the game for at least several turns.
That's why I decided to split my heroes and send them in different directions - to be able to clean more sites (on his territory too) and ghoul more units. Unfortunately, Melciar couldn't help me with cherubs and I had to scout on my own.
Soon, we spotted Keldon's hero who was taking objects in the north.

As many objects were also cleaned in the south, I presumed that there was another small army of Keldon or some Fist's units on the surface.

I needed to choose my route and found something that impressed me very much.

We can see two Sphinx Temples here!

It is a very good option to boost yourself to Sage, isn't it?
And very soon I found the army of Fist.

Take into account two factors - no leader here and Fist playing dwarf in underground - and you can conclude that it's just a second army.
Let's look at the heroes.
1. Sorcerer

2. Dreadnought.

Dreadnought is a very good option here as a third hero.
Very soon Keldon started to build cities on snow and I figured out it was the closest city to me at that moment.

When I came closer to the Sphinx Temples I found Fist nearby.
As you can see on the screenshot, I was calculating his movement points a lot at that moment. I have a strong feeling he could have taken the Temple and then left to the mountains and from there to water.

He wasn't able to defeat my army (as the snowball was too good) and retreated taking a tomb.

My second army wasn't far away too and I didn't want him to approach it as the goal was to harass Keldon. That's why I was hunting flying units to ghoul them and soon got some. A perfect counter to cherubs.

And here Melciar surprised me once again: he attacked a tomb near his domain and lost everything. Well, almost. And went into the void again.

After this failure he lost interest in the game. I managed to persuade him to send me some gold and build armies to defend his throne city from possible attacks.
Let's skip several turns here which were pretty boring because I was taking these Sphinx Temples and my opponents were busy too. I was expecting an attack from Keldon and enhanced my scouting. And soon I spotted him here.

His druid hero.

His path to Melciar was incredibly good, no need to comment.

I was trying to follow Fist units with my scouts all the time.

Now it's time to reveal some of my forces. This is the army which was going to Fistandantilus.

I continued to follow Fist. At this time I started to face big problems with my economy and even monoculture didn't help.

I was checking the position of Keldon's army by looking at these explored objects.

And soon Fist's leader showed up taking the goblin town.

It was pretty obvious his leader was there because he needed to escape from my main army. I also couldn't find him anywhere else on the map. The route chosen by Fist was really good: two sanctums on his way.

Since I was close to his throne city I decided to send a third army in the underground to approach his leader. This maneuver gave me a chance to clean some objects in front of him and try to organize a leaderkill.
Approaching Fist's empire.

And Keldon going to Melciar

Fist ran away with his home army

And the first sanctum was explored

A huge missplay of Fist. One of his stacks was caught in the underground.

And the second sanctum was explored soon. I disbanded the cadaver in order not to show my knowledge of his presence here.

I needed to take the dungeon and the shrine nearby before Fist.

Fist's main stack

Keldon came to Melciar's domain where they both had some fights and lost units. All the towns but the throne city were captured by Keldon

Preparing for the fight.

Taking the dungeon.

Checking the movement points and planning my position next turn.

Fist had plenty of units defending the throne city.

He had another town, now on the surface. I needed to take it too.

And more units were trying to escape my necro army

And then suddenly I couldn't believe my eyes. Not only Fist approached my army with his leader stack, he also didn't summon a cherub and didn't remove the buff!
I decided to sacrifice two units and attack Fist's tier-1 dwarves with probably victory: make his leader believe he could win the battle and use some casting points. But I failed.

I made a number of tests which showed that this position was the best here. The plan was to split Fist's army. I had an advantage in the number of units with range attacks and had some huge hopes on the Reaper.

**************************************************************
And finally I attacked...

I lost!

The battle was very close, almost everyone was dead. As you can see, Fist's leader fell too, that's why the evangelist lost his resurgence ability and wasn't resurrected after the battle. The crusaders were insanely good here ^^
I razed almost all Keldon's cities but my second army wasn't that strong to take the throne.

That's why I had to run.

At the same time Melciar, being afraid of Fist, decided to run to my domain with his leader. And failed because he didn't scout properly >_< I also want to mention a very good play from Keldon who set this incredible trap!

So Melciar went to the void again and could have lost soon but...

I don't really understand why Fist didn't go to his domain. There was an exit to the surface not far away from the place of our fight. Had he gone there he would have taken Melciar's throne city. I'm not sure though that he would have been able to do it before Melciar came back from the void but still it was the best option because Keldon didn't have enough army to take my teammate's throne (Keldon's leader and his forces were protecting his own throne city from my second army).
So Fist went to my domain and showed himself here.

He was on survival mode because he had already lost all his cities. But still had 1000 + gold <smiletext0>

This was possible due to a very good strategy on the map: he used all the objects to keep him alive.

As I lost my third necromancer hero I got another one right before the battle. I heavily mulliganed him in order to get someone really useful. I got a level 5 hero with a possible immediate upgrade to stealth commander. Since I knew Fist had no units with true sight I decided to take the hero and make a trap.

At the same time I backstabbed Keldon's cities because his main army started to pursue my stacks.

I'm not sure whether Fist saw the hidden army or not. Anyway, he approached my forces and took the city letting me attack him next turn.

The decisive battle and the second attempt to win the match.

The game was over after this fight because Keldon was now alone against two of us.

And it was impossible for him even to run away.

So soon I was able to combine all my forces and come to his domain to claim the victory.
Once again, thank you for a very interesting match. I want to thank the judges and the organizers of this tourney which made this match possible. Unfortunately, it looks like this game was my last one in the tournament since I am not able to play the next stage at the moment. I would be grateful if the judges allowed the Sinners to take my place there. If it happens, I wish them good luck against Bastards of the North! And the best team will fight Gab in the finals.

It took us 98 turns and 9 months to finish this emotional roller coaster of a game, but it's finally over =) I want to thank everyone who participated in it, both allies and opponents, you all made this game truly epic and thrilling.

This is a game that definitely needs to have a report written about it. I'm not sure when I'll be able to get to it and how long will it take, but the story of our struggle for survival that started with losing Melciar on the day 18(?) and eventually ended with us emerging victorious is just too dramatic to be left unshared. So stay tuned, I guess =)

Good evening, guys. It's about time I told you about the match. Though it officially ended by score and (what a pity!) had no big fights (3 vs 3 would be lovely), the game was intense and interesting. At least for me.
As Melciar has been playing really bad in his last bf games (spoiler: this one turned out to be no exception XD), I decided to let him take the class he wanted to play and felt himself comfortable with. It was sorcerer - a very solid choice for the midgame as the combination of apprentices and phantasmal warriors allows to easily clean the objects and later form a full floating stack of units. In case he fails, I was to cast summons to his towns to help him and that's why I took druid.

In early game we were definitely better in scouting: both central dwellings became our vassals. Fairies and Dragons. A perfect combination. Underground was my responsibility this time and I managed to examine it very well. One of the scouts came really close to Jonny's town:

This is how the map looked like at that time:
Surface.

And underground

Unexpectedly to all players Jonny's town was soon razed and that was no doubt a huge success for our team.

Another Jonny's town was soon attacked by neutral forces and I understood that he wasn't doing well at that time. So I figured out that I shouldn't be afraid of a powerful rush. And left my domain to explore new horizons.

Still better safe than sorry, you know. So I kept a defensive army.

And soon produced some Sun Guards in order to tackle a possible cavalry rush.

Suddenly Melciar made a very pathetic fight against neutrals (in my opinion one shouldn't attack if he isn't sure =)

He lost 2 almost elite apprentices

And soon lost a town to neutrals. Not a very good start for a sorcerer.

He became very upset and I understood I would probably have to fight alone in the match. So I studied the map very carefully and figured out I could get a huge advantage in research points. I made a very good route for my army. The idea was to visit this:

And this. Why not?

Damn, Melciar, you should keep your flying scouts on the water to avoid this.

He had big problems with neutrals, I had to make them follow my unit and tried to keep them as far as I could from Melciar's towns.

Soon a huge part of the whole map was opened. Have a look at this:
Surface

Underground

Melciar went to capture a huge elf town and soon found Rookie's scouts there. I warned Melciar to be very careful and asked him to scout a lot.
But it was Rookie who made a perfect scouting this time. He wasn't greedy to lose trained units because scouting was always more important. And he was absolutely right.

Having lost 2 hunters, Rookie continued to scout near Melciar. This time it was an elite fairy.

I was a bit worried but Melciar had already got a floating stack so I presumed he would keep himself safe going to the water/rapids if necessary.

But he failed to scout and went blind to take a tavern where he was caught by Rookie >_<

And the game for my teammate was almost over.
He lost his army, heroes, the elf town and still had problems in his domain. With neutrals.

I understood I had to help my teammate now but that wasn't easy as I found Jonny slowly heading to my part of the map.

He was leveling up elems and it was dangerous. Another surprise was to come out soon:

A tier-3 Naga and some charmed units. Like a draconian flyer.

The good thing was that, having scouted all this in advance, I was prepared and managed to approach him with my defensive army. I wasn't able to win this, of course, but could easily block him here by building a fortress.

And that was a perfect plan.

At that time I spotted another danger: Rookie was building a lot of towns, faster than me (as a human), I didn't want him to get monoculture and great morale bonuses so I prepared a sudden attack. Here.

Rookie's army was fighting with Melciar, Jonny's - leveling up elems. I was pretty safe but had to come quickly.

When I reached the town and captured it Jonny had already finished his floating tier-3 elem stack. He even made his leader fly! I was impressed.
I found his army here.

He soon went back to the town captured by me. And was standing nearby with another stack.

I had to leave immediately but the town was razed and the goal achieved.

Where to go? - I asked myself. And I created a very good plan that worked and, in my opinion, brought us victory.
I decided to rush here.

Using haste berries and leaving Jonny long behind myself. I was finishing researching t4 at that time and was well prepared to fight Rookie on the surface. The only problem was Jonny. I had to find a way not to let him go directly to my domain. And I created an illusion of an attack. My fairy found Jonny's scout checking the north path to his empire.

So I took my defensive army which already had almost 3 stacks in it and started to go to Jonny through the north. The scout could perfectly see me.

Once the scout flew away I turned around and went back.

And Jonny got into the trap. His main army went to meet me near the borders of his domain but never met anyone there.

And that was the gravest mistake. It gave me plenty of time.
My scouting was really good at that time and I'm proud of that ^_^

I found out Rookie had some problems too. He lost his leader (probably in the dungeon) and one of his towns due to rebellion (it wasn't a good idea to build human cities on volcanic).
So he didn't rush Melciar after he defeated his army but captured the elf town and started to recover from losses. He later caught Melciar on another mistake: my teammate should have kept a wyvern near the dragon dwelling all the time but started to scout nearby and simply forgot to return it back. So Rookie took advantage of the moment and captured it on manual.

And that was a pretty bad fight on his part.
I was running there as fast as I could and managed to prevent vassalization of the dwelling.

With the first paragon t4 in my army.

Rookie had to leave to the water where he started to kill Melciar's scouts and slowly go to his domain.

He killed my invisible scout with a shaman so we lost sight of him for several turns.

Later we spotted him near Melciar.

Melciar's army was very weak at that time so I advised him to go after me to the center of the map. Jonny was still pretty far away from my domain in the underground so we had time to go to Rookie's empire.
The route to Rookie was very rich in objects.

He probably should have taken these sphynx temples himself, now I got them and boosted my research points and gold.
I was able to kill Rookie's scout and prevent him from entering underground.

But I couldn't counter his attack on Melciar's towns.

Jonny went to my domain with his floating stack.

He built a very good town here stabilizing his economy but it was me who finally took monoculture.

Rookie took Melciar's towns but wasn't able to take the throne city with many archers inside.

Melciar's morale was very bad, we had to leave volcanics as soon as possible. Fortunately for us, we were close to Rookie's empire.

And Jonny was closer and closer...

Just have a look at his leader.

The best leader among us for sure.

The judges announced we had to finish the game by score very soon. So the task for both teams was to get as much score as they could.
I managed to attack Rookie's town before Jonny got there to help.

But had to leave the town for 1 turn not to split my army. The sphinx guys were slow in forests.

Melciar was near me.

The plan was to take Rookie's towns one by one and go further leaving them to Melciar who would guard them.
Rookie sent some troops to my goblin city but wasn't able to take it. The defense was pretty good there.

And now Jonny:

The bad thing for Jonny was that he had just one stack. I could never capture it on lava but I could easily defend my towns. Not all of them, of course. But once Jonny took my town he had to immediately run back on lava (otherwise I would have attacked him), so I was able to take the town back on my turn.
My defensive army was pretty solid:

I had another stack in my throne city. I have to admitt I missplayed here: I should have built more mystics as they could easily counter elems. But I was so happy to spam shamans that I forgot about it =(

So we had a kind of stalemate. And it wasn't working good for Jonny who had to capture at least something for the score.
He tried to come to the fairies.

At that time I understood how powerful my opponent was.
At that moment I tried to take one of Jonny's towns with a small diversion but failed.

In Rookie's domain we found out that Jonny went to defend one of the towns.

So we decided to go south and take Rookie's vassal. From there we could head to his throne city.
As we had just 1-2 turns left before the end of the match, I advised Melciar to take his defensive army and approach one of his towns.

Rookie immediately went there to defend.

But was that a good idea? The armies were like these:
Melciar's troops:

The chance of winning this was pretty low. But we just needed to kill the leader.
Melciar attacked him on his turn and...lost. Though Rookie went into the void!
Suddenly my t2 scout took Rookie's throne city which was undefended.

So we managed to defeat our opponent on the last turn of the match XD Pure luck, I say.
The final situation in the underground was like this. Still the stalemate.

The Scout is still available at start: it isn't really a spell, so we haven't changed it. Warlord's version of a summoning spell is Raise militia - this one has to be researched.

Warlord still start with Scout or does he also have to research it?

So I've finally got around to posting this game. There isn't going to be a huge report about it because there is not much to talk about. Melciar surrendered in about 15 days after losing a settler building a city to my scouts, losing a leader in a bad combat against... brigands, I think?.. and things generally not working out for him. I, on the other contrary, had a very lucky and rich start and basically had everything going on for me, so the possible continuation of this game would not have been kind to Melciar =)

What does deserve a mentioning though is the fact that is was one of the first games played with the PBEM++ mod, and as fast as this game was, it still allowed to see some of the changes in action. Probably the most impactful one is the reorganizing of starting spells. Not having a scouting summon pre-researched on start not only provides more equality to the starting condition (since there can't be a situation when one player has a summon and another one doesn't), but also slows things down a bit. The scouting delay itself makes it a bit harder to plan the rush early on, plus the presence of one more skill in the class unit research chain means the access to the rushing units (martyrs, bards, phantasm warriors, etc.) is delayed as well. This slight slowdown wasn't the primary reason behind this change, but I have to say I find it turned out better than we thought it would =) Not nearly as impactful, but having a guaranteed damaging combat spell is nice too.

Another change that's not immediately obvious, but is still noticeable after a while, is the heroes leveling up slower than the leader. In practice (more specifically, in my practice: I don't know for sure how other players are leveling them up) most of their XP comes from the repeated use of the ranged attacks, and this exact XP source got cut by 33%. Personally, I find that the resulting pace feels right, or at least definitely better than it felt before =) You can probably still luck out to get a very nice hero, disregard your class and go mind controlling, but it's gonna take you longer to get to the point when it pays off. Which is definitely a good thing.

I might be a bit biased, but I think the mod is working out quite nicely so far =)
